Contributor questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an endowment and how is it different from a donation?

An endowment is permanent capital: the gift is not spent but invested, and only the income goes to programmes. A donation is spent in full on the Fund’s purposes.

How are funds used after a contribution?

The contribution becomes part of the endowment capital and is placed with an asset manager. Investment income goes to the Fund’s charitable programmes in education, science and innovation.

Can a contribution be returned?

A contributor may request the return of an endowment gift in the cases set out in the endowment agreement: when its term expires or the endowment capital is dissolved.

Is there a minimum contribution?

There is no minimum for donations. The terms of an endowment gift are agreed individually and set out in the endowment agreement.

How will I learn about the results?

The Fund publishes its annual financial statements, audit report and programme reports within 30 days of approval. Contributors may also request information on the Fund’s activities and use of assets.

Who manages the investments?

Assets are invested by an asset manager selected by the Board of Trustees, in line with the approved investment policy.

How is the capital protected?

The law and the Fund’s charter do not allow the principal of the endowment capital to be spent. The Board of Trustees and the internal audit service oversee the Fund, and the annual accounts are independently audited.

Can I decide how the income is used?

Yes. The use of income can be set out in the endowment agreement, or you can propose your own charitable programme. A contributor whose gift exceeds 10% of the capital may join the Board of Trustees.
